PFAS: Finding the Way to the Future

The family of chemicals collectively referred to as PFAS presents both analytical challenges and potential adverse health effects for human exposure. In an effort to address these concerns, in March 2019, Governor Mills created the Maine PFAS Task Force. The mission of this broad reaching group of stakeholders was to review the extent of PFAS contamination in Maine and provide recommendations about how to protect Maine residents from exposure to this new pollutant of concern. The final report from this committee contained a set of shared priorities to mitigate the risks associated with PFAS.

But now the real work begins.  How do we reduce our reliance on these chemicals that have become ubiquitous in our clothing, packaging and cookware?  When used, how do we keep PFAS from escaping into the environment?  And once concentrations are detected in the environment, how can we clean them up?

In this panel discussion, we will hear from those leading the way in this effort, in a variety of sectors.  Attendees will learn about the challenges and successes of a state-wide risk assessment of industrial chemicals, the development of best practice guidelines and innovative methods of PFAS treatment, with a focus on solutions -- moving from why, to how, we can address the concerns of these "forever chemicals" in the environment.
